Sleep Disorders - 10 side effects of the CPAP Machine

Side effects of the CPAP machine
After a diagnosis of sleep apnea, a debilitating cause of sleep interruptions, one of the most effective treatments currently available is the CPAP or continuous positive airway pressure machine in conjunction with a face mask.

Many patients will notice an immediate improvement in their sleep patterns and a reduction in other symptoms after just one night of use. For others however, a little time may be required to get used to the process and to curing the sleeping disorder.Regular communication with your doctor is vital, especially to ensure the machine is set up correctly, for example he will check to see if the pressure is too high or too low

It is estimated that 60% of CPAP users are still using the machine after a few months. By addressing the most common side effects that stop the use of the machine it is hoped you will get a better nights sleep and say goodbye to sleep apnea and drastically improve your life and safety while driving etc.

Here are ten side effects or problems you may notice when using a CPAP machine

Claustrophobia
– it can take some time getting used to having a mask over your face. Start of slowly if necessary, an hour at a time and increase the duration of use every night even if it’s only a minute or two.

Try using the mask before bed for an hour or two to get used to it. Drugs can help if the anxiety gets too much but this is to be avoided if possible.

Try not to overtighten the straps on the maskThe purpose of the CPAP is to allow you to get a good night’s sleep so tell your doctor if the machine is preventing this.

Nasal irritation and congestion
– the air from the CPAP machine can dry out your nasal passages. This may irritate the area and trigger a response, often a runny nose, sneezing, congestion or a burning sensation. Nose bleeding can also be expected.

Most machines will come with a humidifier, when used properly this should alleviate your nasal irritations by moistening the airways as the pressured air passes through. A heated humidifier can make the treatment much more comfortable

Uncomfortable Mask or pressure loss
– the mask does not have to be uncomfortable. If it is causing you discomfort, tell your doctor or CPAP machine specialist as there are many mask shapes and sizes. Some fit around the nose and some include the mouth. Some are wider and some are deeper.

Try different masks until you find the one that is most comfortable. You may need to use the machine everyday for the rest of your life so a good fit is essential. Advancing technologies may require an upgrade every few years.

Beards, mustaches and other facial hair along with a dirty or oily face may prevent a proper air-tight seal. Good hygiene and facial maintenance will ensure pressure can’t escape through the mask. If the seal become worn, see you doctor.

Sleep interruption and lack of progress – The CPAP machine may be uncomfortable at first, but it relieves your symptoms of sleep apnea and will help with the sleeping disorder. Remember to accentuate the positives of the treatment, think about waking up headache free, work at sleeping through the night.

Set goals for yourself, try to wear the CPAP machine mask for a longer duration every night, even if only for a few minutes. If your health is not improving or you’re finding sleep even harder than usual, be sure to see your doctor

Difficulty breathing though the nose – CPAP is usually applied through the nose. Your sleep apnea is responds best to pressure in this area. If you find it difficult to breath through your nose than the treatment may not be particularly effective.

Try treatments for allergies or congestion initially and consult your doctor. If there are larger structural problems with your nasal passages or septum then surgery may be recommended. There are a range of full face masks that may be more suited to you

Headaches and ear pressure – The CPAP machine will increase the pressure in the airways. If your ears or sinus are blocked due to allergys or cold and flu congestion than a pressure difference can develop between your differenct body cavaties. This pressure difference will cause discomfort and even pain, similar to diving deep into a pool.

Over the counter decongestion medication may relieve the symptoms and allow the contual use of the CPAP amchine. If there is no improvement don’t use the device for a few days until the cold passes.

If there is no improvement after a prolonged period and it is preventing you from using the CPAP machine, consult with your specialist.

Air in the stomach
– Some people may find in the morning that they are experiencing gas or a bloated stomach after sleeping with the CPAP machine in place.

This suggests a poor alignment between the intake (your nose) and your respiratory system. Try not to use pillows that are too high, this can cause the chin to tilt down and block off the airways we are trying to keep open. Talk to your CPAP specialist, a lower pressure may be benefitial.

Noise – The CPAP machine can be noisy, especially older models. Try placing the machine further away from the bed, or mask the machine noise with a fan or other source of white noise. If it becomes a serious issue ask your doctor for suggestions for a newer quieter model.

Bear in mind that the machine noise is probably far quieter than your snoring!

Tube gets in the way
– Finding a position for the tube to sit so that it avoids your own arms and those of your partners as well as allowing you to make your natural shifts in bed at night.

Many people find that the CPAP tube sits bets running directly from the mask to the headboard or top of the bed and from there to the machine

Taking off the mask at night and not replacing it – Try to take the mask with you if you get up during the night. Unhook the tube at the machine and take it with you.

Keeping the mask on will greatly increase the chance that you will keep using the CPAP machine after an interruption during the night.

    1. I think it is trapped air(gas) from using cpap. I get pain from using cpap and I know that is what it is from, because if I get up and move around and bend over I start burping like crazy and after I burp for half hour or so the pain is gone.

  2. I've finally found a mask that works with my CPAP and end up wearing it about 4-6 hours a night. This has been for three weeks. However, I'm having a harder time in waking up in the morning--feel like a hangover, groggy, headache, bloated, nauseous--don't feel able to have breakfast and don't get moving until 11 or 12 noon. any ideas?

  3. Some where around 6 years, it took, to be diagnosed with moderate central and obrtructive apnea. I missed my sleep study appointment and didn't reschedule for a year and a half later. I didn't think I had a sleep disorder. I knew I was always tired, had no energy, becoming more and more unplesent to be around. I was falling asleep while driving and resorted to pulling over in a parking lot for a nap on a 30 mile drive because I couldn't make it. My point is, I have a cpap now and what a difference! Yes sometimes my headgear isn't very comfortable and needs to be adjusted and yes not every night is a perfect night sleep. I however appreciate the 90% restfull sleep I get now apposed to the 0% from before cpap. My life is happier and heathier. I am lucky to have to deal with the adjustments of cpap therapy

    3. You can contact WY DOT and see if you get them to release accident info to you. I don't think anything I say you'd believe anyway. My 10yr old grand daughter also tried to wake me up. If she would of kept driving she would of been stopped. Study what causes sleep walking.

  4. I have dry, painful sinuses due both to moving to a dry climate and using a CPAP.Some nights I wake up with a burning headache. Other times I can't take my tongue off the roof of my mouth with out pain, since I am so dry.
I have been using a CPAP for 6-7 years. I have used 3 types of humidifiers and none seem to make any difference.
My doctor had me do another sleep study (#4) and lo-and-behold the sleep study showed that I don't need to use the machine anymore. I have lose 40 lbs in the last 6 months, and the assumption is that I no longer need it because my airway is not blocked anymore.

Apparently,I have had sleep and breathing issues since I was born, according to my mother. I have tried on several nights to go without the machine. I am not convinced that I don't need the machine anymore.
What can I do to stop the inflammation from dry cracked sinuses, other than a neti, humidifier, and saline spray? I want a full face mask but my insurance company is claiming that I no longer need a machine, so they refuse to pay for a full face mask. (I am a mouth breather). I am suffering! What can I do?

  5. Are there any (unbiased) studies of persons that stop using the CPAP after a prolong use? My doctor recommended one and I am worried about being a slave to this machine for the rest of my life. Will I be able to stop using it eventually, or is this a life long commitment. Will I be able to change my mind after I start, or is there no turning back?

So far what I have read looks like cigarette adds of the 60s. It is GREAT, it will make you feel better. Do not worry about side effects!!!

I have been using the machine for about 2 months now, the problem that concern me is, for the last 2 nights I have been waken from my sleep with sharp pains radiating throughout my back and chest area. 3. I have been having chest pressure/pain for a few years. (So much that I had my heart checked) I have come to the conclusion that the issue stems from using my cpap. I may be completely wrong. Sometimes I think it's causing problems with my gerd too. And sometimes I think it's causing my upper ribs to be sore.

Anyone else having gerd and rib problems?

    4. I've only recently begun using a cpap and my one big complaint is shoulder and back pain. Doctor doesn't want to know, too busy following doctrine. On other posts there is a suggestion that cramping caused by not moving in bed whilst sleeping may be a primary factor. Also cpap users tend to rely heavily on chest breathing rather than a balance of chest and belly breathing. To me this pain is reminiscent of my childhood asthma.

      Delete
    5. I, too have been having indigestion and flatulence; along with stomach bloating after using cpap for 6 weeks. My physician also said the CPap was not at fault! Yeh, right~

    6. for some of these pain issues and chest and back issues it sounds like fibromyalgia. These are all symptoms of fibro. CPAP is a good option once you get used to it and have it adjusted to your health issues. If in doubt have a sleep study done. It's amazing how many people have no clue how low their oxygen level drops during the night. My sister in law was advised if she was in hospital, she would have had a cardiologist called immediately. She was almost at a code blue level.

    1. I have actually noticed as of late just the opposite side effect and wonder if others have as well. In the one year I have used my CPAP, I have gained 30 lbs! I have also noticed increased difficulty breathing throughout the day. I wonder if anyone else has had similar issues?

    2. I have been using CPAP for just over a year and have put on about the same amount of weight, plus wake up with back pain and bloating which affects me all day. I thought with a good sleep I would lose weight ! Now, I sleep well for about 6 hours max then the back pain wakes me up. i do have spinal problems and arthritis so maybe I'm not moving around in bed as much as i used to. The CPAP pressure has been checked and said to be necessary for my severe OSA. haha - I use so many painkillers now that I get constipated so starting mild laxatives! The painkillers only have a 4 hour effect hence the 6 hours max sleep I guess.

    3. I have been also on CPAP since September 2013 and I have gained nearly 11 lbs! if not more all around my tommy /stomach and now also constipated . Since December I also experiencing some light pain in my hand and arm. Just questioning myself on these little problems. Is this all because of the CPAP ? or what? It supposed to correct a problem and far as I know it is creating others. What is this? Why when you go for the CPAP the provider or doctors do not mention about these possibilities effects?

    1. Hi There,
I too experience pain but it's more of stiffness in my neck, shoulders & back. I'm wondering if the cause could be related to staying in one stationary position for 6-10 hours a night. Have you reported this to your physician. I'm interested in what he/ she has to say about your side effects. Please keep me posted. I will be returning to the provider of my machine for a follow up appointment tomorrow and will ask if anyone has reported the same experience. If they provide any substantial info, I will pass it on. Good luck with your situation. I hope you the best.

    1. Buy a new bed. The pain is likely from the lack of shifting around while you sleep. Prior to using the cpap machine you woke up throughout the night which means you also likely changed positions.
Now using cpap you are able to sleep all night but this means your not awakening and thus not changing positions.

      Delete
    2. Perhaps your pain level has increased due to your inability to find a comfortable sleep position in order to accommodate the mask and tubing...
I can no longer sleep as I did before...it dictates how I sleep due to the COLD air that blasts out of the tubing...they tell me 'exhale' air....whatever it is, it is torture

  17. I have been having problems with muscle soreness in my hands, arms and shoulders. Sometimes I can't even turn on a faucet or raise my arm to shampoo. I was almost an invalid. I stayed off the machine for about two weeks and it went away. I started back using the machine and the next day I was in terrible pain again. The doc also says I do not have arthritis and I finally had to call on a holiday for help, the pain was so bad. My Doctor said she was going to check about this being a symptom, she will inform me this month at my appt. I know I will not use it again until something is found about it. It may just be some and not others.

  21. I've had my machine for 3 months and feel no different. I was given a full face mask to start with which caused pressure sores on my face. Then I was given a nasal pillow which gives me an awful rash. My sleep pattern has not changed or improved and I am now committed to a treatment which is not helping me as I cannot drive unless I comply. As a nurse I know the 'one size fits all approach' is not suitable for all patients, but it seems you are given the machine and told (as I was) 'It works, get on with it'. If medicine is evidence based, where are the studies which cite 100% sucess for the CPAP machine?

    1. I sympathise. Everybody I know that has a CPAP machine says it is bliss. I am beginning to think I am going mad. I seem to be constantly on the phone to the Doctor.
I have a sweat rash on my head where the straps go, my sinuses are painful. I am depressed and I don't think at this stage it is worth it. I also think because of my age 70 it is much harder.

    2. I recommend to anyone who is having trouble with the heavy, obtrusive face masks, to try a nasal cannula instead. I started treatment with this type of delivery many years ago and am still going strong. The only issue is nasal irritation, but I avoid that by swabbing my sinuses with a thin coating of Vaseline -- just saw on this thread that others use vitamin E oil, and I'm going to give that a try since Vaseline doesn't break down and get absorbed. I've worried about this quality of the Vaseline all this time, but have had no ill effects. Oh, if you're having issues with the straps irritating your skin, I'd have your doctor check to see if you're pulling them too tight. Many 1st time users do that, worrying the thing'll slip off, but it just needs to create a seal with your skin, not dig into it. Oh, and that issue is completely eliminated with a nasal cannula.

I have been to multiple doctors for these problems and not once has anyone agreed or accepted the fact that these problems could be associated with using a cpap machine and/or suggesting adjustments that could be made to help.

I finally asked the right questions on-line and this is where I find that there are side effects from using CPAP.

I have made another appointment on Wednesday with the Sleep Apnia doctor and strongly requesting that something be done with my machine/equipment to help reduce the side effects.

    3. Agree with dropping the maximum pressure if find you rest well until it reaches maxumum. Lowered mine gradually and 9.4 was perfect. You do need to still move about at night or you will indeed be sore. Better to move and adjust than lie stock still. Properly fitted either nasal or full face, it should not be real tight. Too tight and it often leaks from buckling in spots requiring even more pressure. Love my CPAP - sincerely glad to have it.

She now has impacted sinuous, infected ears with excruciating ear pressure, vertigo, chest pressure and nausea. Her doctor ordered an MRI of her head and a chest x -ray. The results were that the CPAP was the cause of all her problems and was ordered not to use it ever again. She had been using it on a 7 setting but it still caused too much pressure on the sinuouses and ears.

I haven't had any problems until about 2 years ago I got bad head aches, it was like my brain was hitting the inside of my skull. I was tired and had bad earache with really bad swelling to my face just below my ears. The worst bit was the vertigo and the nausea, exactly like severe travel sickness, My doctor said I had a viral infection in my glands/inner ear that's what was causing the symptoms. This began to occur once every 2-3 months and have been back to the doctor's and had loads of tests done. It's only by chance Iv'e check out the site, thanks for your post its a big relief to know this is could be related to my CPAP machine.

The down sides I have found are that sometimes my chest is sore, but have discovered that it is from a mucous build up in my lungs and after a bit of coughing, the mucous tends to come up and I feel better. The second side effect is my bite wing has changed with my bottom jaw moving forward slightly. But overall I can only recommend a CPAP machine.

  30. I have been using a Respironics CPAP with humidifier and a Swift LT For Her mask for 3 years with no problems. My mask uses the nasal pillow and the tube goes over the head. It is so light I don't even notice it! It took me 3 different masks until I found one that was comfortable. I sleep on my side and it doesn't leak nor does the hose get in the way. For those having sinus infections use distilled water in the humidifier AND put fresh water in it EVERY night! Do not use tap water! Be sure you are cleaning your breathing mask frequently. If you are waking up with a dry mouth you are sleeping with your mouth open and will need to get a chin strap to keep your mouth closed. If your chest hurts when you wake up it is because your lungs are being expanded from the air, it goes away when you wake up because you are probably breathing shallower when you are awake. Don't give up on using your CPAP my dad died in his sleep from sleep apnea. Work with your doctor to get a system that works for you!

  33. I've been using CPAP for just over a month, and it's completely controlling the apnea (AHI between 0.4 and 2.6). However, I still can't sleep. I always wake up after 2 hours, then every hour or so after that, till I finally can't get back to sleep around 4:30 AM. Give up and get up around 6. Very disappointed in continuing lack of sleep. Anyone else with this problem, and did you solve it?

  36. I got the cpap in August. For the first 5-7 ngts I could tell I was resting better. I was determined to make this work even though I tend to be claustrophobic. I coped with it very well. After the first week I started feeling really "flatline" during the day. Not talking much, fatigued, just no emotion. Also felt stressed but it was a different kind of stress than I have ever had. Kinda antsy feeling. One night I was trying to figure out why I was feeling like this and it just came to me that it might be the result of the cpap, so I didn't use it that night. The next day I felt better. Didn't use it the 2nd night either and started actually feeling like myself the next day. Haven't used it since. Can't stand to be flatline feeling and stressed like I was. Went to my dr and he said my body was having to learn a new way to sleep and it was going to take awhile before I would feel normal again!! He sent me back to the place that services and sells the machines. They think the pressure might have been going up too high during the night and caused this reaction?? The dr ordered a new card which will keep my machine at a max pressure of 10. It was set on 15. I'm going to start back using it tonight. I hope that it doesn't effect me like it did the last time. I haven't heard anyone mention any of these side effects! I'm about ready to give up on wearing if it makes me feel like it did before. Please tell me if any of you felt like this. Thanks!

  37. I've been using my CPAP for about three months. For the past two and a half months, I have had headaches 24/7, first mild and now moderate. Has anyone else experienced this? Could this be a side effect of the machine, or something else entirely?

    1. After my air pressure was changed, due to double vision, I ended up with a severe headache over my right eye. My right ear hurt and side of face. I was treated the 2nd week with for a sinus infection and took advil every 4 hours. after the 3rd week of a severe 24/7 headache, i was sent too a ENT. He had a MRI done of my sinus cavities. Very inflamed, and found a small benign tumor. He then sent me to a specialist who doesn't believe that is causing my headaches. Directly related to my c-pap being the cause so now onto a neurologist. As long as I take 4 advil every 4 hours, my headache is mostly manageable. Now having surgery for unrelated issue, I can only take tylenol this week. Head is killing me again! Also sleep apnea is worse than ever. Will let you know when I go to the neurologist.

  38. I have been using a C-Pap for over 8 years...it has literally saved my life. This is my advice for what it's worth. Most of the people asking questions about pain and soreness are describing the effects of having a fungus or mold growing in or on the C-Pap machine and tubing. Washing the tubing and the water reservoir very frequently is a must. I have found once you get a fungal growth on the plastic it is hard to get it cleaned permanently....buy new tubing and mask. Something I have found that really helps is a product called Pure....I am not sure if you can find this at the retail level...but I will tell you what is in it. The active ingredients are collided silver and citric acid both kill fungus, mold, and bacteria. I find that I can go more than a month with out getting any kind of irritation from the plastic.
As for some of the other issues people think they are having with the C-Pap, I have found when we get to the point of needing a C-Pap machine we have other health issues going on. A big issue for me is food allergies or sensitivities....they affect me in the glands, nervous system, and back. It has taken me several years to identify the pain and swelling they cause and it takes days to weeks to eliminate them from my system. If the food is causing an autoimmune response it can take longer to eliminate the built up of anti-bodies in my system....by then I have forgotten what I ate to cause the pain in the first place. A diet journal is critical to help you spot pain and symptom trends. Allergy testing does not always identify what is causing the reaction, so you have to do your own analysis. Something else that I have identified as a underlying problem is dental work...the silver fillings...which are full of mercury. It causes gland dysfunction and poisoning....takes a long time to get this out of the body.
    Hope this helps.

I put vapor rub inside my nose and seems to help a lil... Now I feel like I have it on during the day even when it's not on. I used to breathe a lil better before cpap. How do u sleep with it on? I end up sleeping at 4 am due to the machine. I am now pregnant so I know I need it even more, any suggestions? I also all of a sudden get serious trembling chills in my body that I need to cover up with two heavy blankets because of the cold I feel... I feel my heart ❤ pulse go up like 100% more than normal and that gets scary when it happens. I need help...????

I can still smell a rat! Was told I could quit breathing in my sleep and die! Not with my luck. Back to the plastic- Does anyone realize that electrical spark (like from a motor) produces OZONE, which not only breaks down plastic, but causes major health problems like many of the symptoms described in this forum?

When I do take off the mask and force myself to get out of bed, I feel dizzy and weak, so sleepy that I sway on my feet. Could these be CPAP side effects? If so, what can I do about them? 44. I came here looking for others experiencing unusual back/abdominal pain while using their CPAP. I was diagnosed with OSA in January of this year, and about the same time was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes.
I got busy and through diet and exercise was able to lose about 40 pounds over the next 6 months. Now I'm off of the Metformin, and only checking glucose once a day. HbA1c is down from 9.6 to 5.4.
I'm having nearly debilitating back pain when I wake up in the morning. I'm wondering if the weight loss has changed my body enough that the pressure specified for the CPAP originally is no longer proper? I didn't have this pain with the CPAP originally. Will lowering the pressure setting help alleviate the back pain?

  50. I have obstructive sleep apnoea, as well as a neurological disorder called slow wave sleep confusional arousal parasomnia, sometimes known as slow wave sleep disorder. The two in combination are a real nightmare (pun intended) as sometimes I rip the mask from my face and fling it across the room. I am unaware of this at the time and only know when I wake feeling awful and see the mask on the floor. I have broken two masks since having CPAP in July of 2013. I am still fatigued, because of the aforementioned and because of disturbances to my slow wave sleep which is when our minds and body restore themselves. Nice. I take medication for the parasomnia, but ironically this supresses slow wave sleep so I am damned if I do and damned if I don't. And they have started to have less efficacy, so a week in hospital to have a rapid withdrawal with a cocktail of drugs being pumped in to me to counteract any nasty effects and then I will try a new drug called Pregabalin and hopefully Modafinil to help me stay alert in the day. On very bad days, because of the sleep apnoea and parasomnia my cognitive abilities are terrible. Anyway, last night night I woke with an excruciating headache which went away after I took the CPAP mask off - I had buried my head in the pillow and my nasal Wisp mask did not expel the carbon dioxide, so I was rebreathing. Not a nice experience. I would say to anyone that thinks CPAP is not worth bothering with and you may think that you can tolerate the effects of not using one to make sure you DO use it, because you are essentially increasing your risk of heart attack and stroke by not doing so. I wear mine, however uncomfortable or however much it marks my face etc. for that reason. I have got used to it now, and sometimes I wake (as in wake properly) and think it is not even on! Good luck to all those who have just been diagnosed with apnoea and given/bought a CPAP machine.

My advise for people diagnosed for OSA to use proper Auto CPAP and use it properly else it lead to side effects mentioned in the post... All the best

  57. I was diagnosed with a mild case of sleep apnea. I started using a C-pap machine approximately 3 1/2 months ago. I have high blood pressure which has been under controlled for 40 years. Starting 12/1/14 my pressure has been out of control--going too far down & back up again. The doctor said the C-pap was helping to control my pressure & he stopped the blood pressure pill, nifedine ER XL, that I had been taking for 40 yrs. Now my pressure is always too high--top & bottom numbers. He added 2 different kind of blood pressure pills since then but my pressure is still high. I feel bloated, tired, dizzy, have bad headaches, irregular heartbeat all the time. I think it could be the C-pap that's causing my problem. I have another BP check scheduled on 12/29/14. I'm not going to use my C-pap again until after that visit to see if my blood pressure goes back to normal & hopefully I feel better. If I feel like my old self again, then I will no for sure that was my problem. Until next time, MERRY XMAS & A HAPPY NEW YEAR.

  59. I used to feel tired during the day so was tested and told I had mild sleep apnoea and I could use CPAP. I did and felt worse for it but kept going because it stopped the snoring and made for a better home life.
I assumed I would feel more refreshed during the day but I wasn't, I felt worse and less able to control my emotions and eating. Over the first year using it I put on 4 stone. Went to a different hospital and tested again and told I now had moderate apnoea. Given a new machine and told after a month it works fine and they won't believe me when I say I feel like shit still.
They won't do anything about it and told me it must be something else causing me to feel constantly tired. Loads of blood tests later and there is nothing wrong with me but they still won't do anything.
    Thanks NHS.

  60. I was diagnosed with sleep apnea and got my first machine about six years ago. However, I had such a hard time getting used to it, that I gave up on it. A couple years later I went to a different doctor and started all over again...new machine, different style mask and a better attitude. Same thing... couldn't handle it. It didn't seem to help. Yesterday I got a different updated machine. Last night I slept well, but woke up very sore. My shoulders, back, and legs hurt. I also had stomach pain, my tummy was distended and my ribs hurt. Wow, all this for a good night's sleep? Maybe my pressure is too high?

I hated it so much I would wake up in the middle of the night with the mask blowing full force across the room. Apparently Id wake up and toss the mask. Now Im sleeping through the night. I even have dreams and havent had them for years. In the beginning I was barely getting the required 4 hours a night on the machine and now its 8+ a night. I sleep so well now I tell everyone!

  68. Rosalee, I am new to CPap also, and have found that the sleep respiratory technitions were very helpful and told me to call and tell them all the problems as they occur. They said to bring in the machine frequently so they could make sure it was working correctly and needed adjustments, or the sleep doctor needed to make adjustments to the recommended settings just for your personal needs.

Stick with the assistance in getting it right for you, it is so good for me to finally get enough sleep that I now can actually believe my life can become happier and more fulfilling. I wnt untreated for at least 13 years, attrbuting my physical problems and resulting depression to being a hypochondriac! Now I know that it was not due to weak character, it was physical, and there is so much I can do with the help of the trained sleep specialists. I hear your despair and sadness, I felt it for so long. Keep in weekly touch if necessary with the Dr and the equipment company, all your problems with the machine seem to possibly need adjustments or more inquiry into your particular forms of sleep disorders. Take heart and belie that this will improve and you will solve the issues, comfort and well-being may be closer than it seems!

Nearly two dozen universities failed to properly warn parents that a national oxygen study may put their premature infants at risk, federal officials say.

According to a letter (PDF) issued by the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) to the University of Alabama at Birmingham, the lead institution in the study, research institutions involved in the study did not offer informed consent to the parents of the premature infants.

The study involved 1,300 premature infants between 24 to 27 weeks of gestation. Researchers evaluated the results of increased or decreased oxygen through a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) treatment to determine the levels of oxygen saturation and neurological effects on premature infants.

According to the letter, the institutions involved were aware of the potential adverse affects the treatment may have on the infants, including blindness and even death. The DHHS Office of Human Research Protection says the institutions had sufficient evidence to know such treatment may cause serious consequences, but never properly informed parents participating in the study about the potential risks. The office considers the failing a violation of regulatory requirements for informed consent.

The study took place between 2004 and 2009 and 130 infants of 654 in the low oxygen level group died, while 91 of 509 infants in the high oxygen group developed a serious eye problem, which can result in blindness.

The study, published in the New England Journal of Medicine in 2010, was financed by the National Institutes of Health and involved 23 high profile Universities, such as Stanford, Duke and Yale.

The consent form only mentioned risks involving abrasion of the infants skin, and claimed there was a potential benefit of decreased need for eye surgery if the infant was assigned to a certain oxygen level group.

DHHS officials say the consent form should have highlighted that the risks of the trial were not the same as the risks of receiving standard care, so parents could make a more informed decision.

  78. Agree. Very much worth the adjustment. No morning headache, actually feel happily rested in morning. One thing I did was went into settings and slowly lowered the maximum pressure until it was ideal. Believe machines are often set too high when a moderate pressure depending on your physical makeup will be beneficial. I use the nasal CPAP but think no matter what type you use, an adjustment of the pressure is far better than giving up on it.
